Bone augmentation

Bone augmentation

Sinus lift

A special form of bone augmentation is the sinus lift. In the maxillary posterior region, the bone height is often so low that an implant cannot be inserted stably in sufficient length. By storing bone or bone augmentation material in the maxillary sinus floor, it is lifted to such an extent that implants can be securely anchored.

In dentistry, bone augmentation refers to methods with which the bone in the jaw area is filled. The body is stimulated to form its own new bone substance, which grows into the filled material and gradually replaces it.

For the placement of an implant, it is important that sufficient bone substance is present. If this is not the case, bone augmentation is necessary. There are different methods to build the bone. One of the most common methods is the so-called augmentation, a bone graft from another area of one's own body. However, the use of bone substitute material or the method of jawbone spreading are also used in bone augmentation.

Bone attachment

If there is a slight bone deficiency in width, the bone necessary for jawbone augmentation can be obtained during the operation. Also, jawbone substitute material can be used or the amount of attachment can be stretched by mixing bone and substitute material. This area is often protected with membranes (a kind of foil) in such a way that undisturbed healing of the bone can take place. Meanwhile, membranes are usually used for this purpose, which are completely broken down by the body.

Bone spread

If the jaw is too narrow, it is possible to prepare the jawbone for implant insertion by spreading the bone. The bone is split, then the implant is inserted and the remaining cavities are filled with bone or bone substitute material.

Bone Block Transplantation

For bone formation of a clearly too narrow or too low jaw section, a larger piece of bone can be removed from elsewhere and then fixed at the target site. Such a bone block usually has to heal for a few months before it can be safely loaded with implants.

Distraction osteogenesis

This is used for bone that is too low for implantation. Here, the bone is split into an upper and lower part. A special screw fixed to these bone parts allows the upper bone brace to be lifted step by step. Here, the potential of the bone for fracture healing by bone formation is used. The device must be worn in the mouth for a few weeks until the bone reaches the specified height.
